What to Know About Gynecologic Oncology Care

What Is a Gynecologic Oncologist?

Gynecologic Oncology is a surgical and medical subspecialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care of cancers of the female reproductive system.

A Gynecologic Oncologist completes four years of OB/GYN residency followed by three to four years of fellowship training specifically in gynecologic oncology, giving her a depth of surgical and clinical expertise that goes well beyond standard gynecologic care.

That specialized training matters. A Gynecologic Oncologist doesn't just treat cancer; she leads the full multidisciplinary care team, performs complex cancer surgeries, oversees chemotherapy, and coordinates radiation therapy with other specialists, guiding patients from diagnosis all the way through survivorship.

According to ACOG and SGO guidelines, if you have a suspected gynecologic cancer such as a concerning ovarian mass, it's important to be evaluated and treated by a Gynecologic Oncologist. This level of specialist care is associated with meaningfully better survival outcomes.

Our Role in Your Care

01

Diagnosis and Staging

Understanding exactly what you're dealing with is the foundation of everything that comes next. Our team conducts a thorough evaluation to accurately identify the type and stage of your cancer, so that every decision made about your care is grounded in a complete and precise picture of your situation.

02

Surgical Management

When surgery is part of your treatment plan, it's performed with a level of skill and precision that only comes from subspecialty training. We use minimally invasive and robotic techniques wherever clinically appropriate to reduce recovery time, minimize discomfort, and help you get back to your life as smoothly as possible.

03

Treatment Planning

No two patients are the same, and no two treatment plans should be either. We develop personalized plans that may incorporate surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy in collaboration with trusted specialists, or a combination of approaches, always guided by the latest evidence and always tailored to your specific diagnosis, your goals, and your life. As a gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Bashir provides both the surgical and the medical treatment of gynecologic cancers, collaborating with medical oncology, radiation oncology, and pathology throughout your care.
